This watery haven is one of the best places in Florida to see manatees in the winter (after Crystal River, which is ideal for year-round viewing). Classified as a manatee refuge, head here between the months of mid-November through mid-March and you might just catch a glimpse of the hundreds of manatees that seek a warm-water shelter in the park. There are plenty of viewing points in the park to watch these gentle giants, as well as spot other wildlife like turtles, osprey, and alligators. It’s also a good spot for hiking, water activities, and biking along the park’s trails.

Where to stay near Blue Springs State Park:

    Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

    Location: Monterey Bay, California

Monterey Bay is a gorgeous vacation spot filled with incredible views of the Pacific Ocean, whale watching opportunities, historic charm, and scenic vistas around every twist in the road. Just a few miles away from Carmel-by-the-Sea and a 30-minute drive from Big Sur, there’s so much to see and do in this area. Point Lobos is a great destination for spotting whales, sea lions, seals, and more sea animals, as well as exploring tide pools, snorkeling in the blue waters, hiking, and taking in the beautiful sights of the rugged coastline. Don’t forget to bring your camera!

Where to stay near Point Lobos State Natural Reserve:

    Palo Duro Canyon State Park

    Location: Texas Panhandle

If you’re not quite up to visiting the Grand Canyon (or have already seen it), try a visit to Palo Duro, the second-largest canyon in the country. Here, you’ll find all the spectacular views you could expect at such a massive geological formation, with the added benefit of southern charm and Texas culture. Approximately 20 miles wide, 120 miles long, and up to 800 feet deep, guests who visit this state park in the Texas Panhandle can expect to marvel at the warm reds and yellows of the canyon’s geologic layers as well as the flowers, grasses, and wildlife that the area is home to.
