A brand-new one-off documentary about Ozzy Osbourne will show his fans “the final chapter” of his life, including his journey to performing at Black Sabbath’s farewell show in Birmingham in July.

Filmed over three years, Ozzy Osbourne: Coming Home tells the story of the singer and wife Sharon’s lives as they try to complete their long-held dream of moving back to the UK.

It will also show audiences the Sabbath frontman’s battles to get fit enough to perform, and the consequences of his ill-health. As daughter Kelly Osbourne says in the film: “Iron man wasn’t really made of iron.”

The one-hour film will air on BBC One on Monday 18 August at 21:00 BST and will also be available on BBC iPlayer.

The documentary is told through “intimate” access to Osbourne family members, including Sharon, Kelly and son Jack Osbourne.

Originally conceived as a series, Home to Roost, announced in 2022, the project evolved into a one-hour film as Osbourne’s health deteriorated.

It will air just under a month after the heavy metal icon died, which came two weeks after he made it on to the stage one final time for his homecoming gig at Villa Park.

Clare Sillery, BBC Head of Commissioning, Documentaries, said: “We are honoured to have had the opportunity to film with Ozzy and his family.

“The film captures an intimate glimpse into their journey as they prepare to return to the UK. It features family moments, humour, reflection and shows the enduring spirit that made Ozzy a global icon.

“We hope it brings comfort and joy to Ozzy’s fans and viewers as they remember and celebrate his extraordinary life.”

A statement from Ben Wicks and Colin Barr, executive producers at Expectation – the company which produced the film – said: “It was an incredible privilege to spend the last few years with Ozzy, as well as Sharon, Jack and Kelly.

“Ozzy wanted to make it back to the UK and appear on stage one last time – our film is an inspiring and poignant account of him fulfilling that dream.”

They added: “Ozzy was loved by millions around the world not just for his music, but for his sense of mischief and his honesty all of which we saw plenty of in the final years of his life.

“But one thing shone through even more brightly to us, and that was Ozzy’s intense love for his exceptional family who were by his side through it all.”
