    Placencia, Belize

Belize’s Placencia Peninsula is a slender 16-mile slash of land in the Caribbean that, as of late, has been attracting beach bums in search of a chiller alternative to ever-popular island hot spots elsewhere in the country. December marks the start of high season, with dry weather and warm temperatures perfect for beach days, diving into the water, or hopping to nearby cays. From here, travelers can visit Belize’s UNESCO-protected barrier reef (the second largest in the world) and the pristine Silk Cayes, ideal for snorkeling with sea turtles, nurse sharks, and vibrant reef fish. Go now before it’s on everyone’s radar: Placencia is gaining global attention, with new nonstop flights from cities like New York and Dallas, and soon-to-arrive luxury hoteliers like the forthcoming Four Seasons in nearby Caye Chapel, the brand’s first private island resort in the Americas. Already open, however, is Itz’ana Resort, which this year completed its full collection of accommodations, including private villas with docks and direct access to the lagoon and Caribbean Sea.

For the best places to visit in December, one must think creatively. Certainly, you’d be free and well-advised to visit a snow-filled escape for some time on the slopes and sitting by the fire with a cup of hot chocolate. But also there are places in the world where the chill of winter is an unknown charm—think tropical islands and stretches of sand along the Equator that have never, ever seen a flake of snow. For that matter, in December, the Southern Hemisphere welcomes summer and Christmas in shorts and flip-flops are the standard. No matter where you go in the last month of the year (you’re certainly the proactive traveler if you’re already planning six months ahead!), you’ll find warmth or coziness, especially with our recommendations. Here are the 13 best places to travel in December, from seaside adventures with sharks to après-ski-and-spa vibes after a day of crushing powder.

(For more ideas, find our full list of the best places to go in 2025 here.)
