On a nondescript, rather gray stretch of St. Clair Avenue sits one of Toronto's hidden gems: a family-owned and operated taqueria offering some of the best authentic Mexican fare in the city. These tacos are juicy. We're talking take one bite and juices run down your chin juicy. There are the classics like al pastor, (slow cooked to perfection) but there are less-familiar options, too, like the La Patron, which comes on a housemade blue tortilla with grilled cheese, cactus, smoked pork chop, onions, and jalapeño. The big, aromatic bowl of mole de olla beef soup is perfect for those chilly Toronto winter nights. There's also a breakfast menu if you want to start your day with huevos rancheros or a torta de chilaquiles. Itacate is run by the four Moreno sisters, so there's truly a feeling here like you've stepped into somebody's home kitchen. It's warm, inviting, and familiar in all the best ways.

In most cities, it’s pretty easy to predict the dominant flavor profile: French in Paris, Japanese in Tokyo, tapas in Madrid. But the best restaurants in Toronto represent Canada’s largest city, where food and drink are something of a chameleon: Because this is one of North America’s most diverse and dynamic metropolises, it has the food scene to match. You’ll find authentic and indulgent Royal Thai cuisine, the best sushi this side of the Pacific (including both dry-aged variations and the classics), and even locally-foraged Québécois delicacies inspired by Ontario’s neighbors just to the east. Toronto’s restaurants offer unparalleled variety and depth. If you’re looking to dive in and experience the best restaurants in Toronto, here’s a roadmap of where to start.

Every restaurant on this list has been selected independently by Condé Nast Traveler editors and reviewed by a local contributor who has visited that restaurant. Our editors consider both high-end and affordable eateries, and weigh stand-out dishes, location, and service—as well as inclusivity and sustainability credentials. We update this list as new restaurants open and existing ones evolve.
